Additional Description
Summary
Kenneth Trahan [KT] is a Katrina survivor from Bay St. Louis Mississippi. The interview begins with Mr. Trahan describing his former community. He was very detailed in his description of the beach and the type of homes that were there. He misses his church the most. He talked about how he was off the day before the storm and was called in to the the nursing home where he worked, to be on the A Team. These were the staff members who would work up to twelve hour shifts and evacuate with the patients if needed and set up their emergency facility. KT talks about how he did his job until the storm was over, helped to relocate the patients to another of the nursing homes facilities and then he left with friends to see what happened to his home. The entire time of the evacuation, he'd not been in touch with his family. After the worst was over, he heard from a cousin that his mother and sister were in Houston so he determined that they were alright.
When he went home to Bay St. Louis [BSL] with his friends he found that his apartment was devastated by the storm. His friend lost a his home, and a girl friend's home suffered less damage. He implied that it may have been the case that her damage was less due to a military base that was stationed across from her home. He was home with his friends in BSL for thirty minutes, time enough to assess the damage, before they left heading for Gulfport, Mississippi. He and his friends drove around the city and viewed much of the devastation first hand. They drove through different areas and saw fallen trees, leveled homes he mentioned.
After a while, he called his family in Houston and his mother, sister and niece went to him and picked him up and brought him to Houston where he remains.
KT talked about the shock of arriving in Houston, a city unbroken, from his home and surrounding areas that were in his estimation eighty percent destroyed. He remarked about how clean and peaceful the city of Houston was compared with what he'd been in.
At home in BSL, he had his own apartment and was independent. Now in Houston, he is living in the retirement community with his mother. He said that BSL will always be his home as it has been since childhood; he will continue to visit as he does. As far as moving back though, he said that he's really not certain where he will make his home.
On thing that Kenneth added was his reaction to the news clip about another nursing home. It was reported that there were staff members who abandoned their posts and he was completely upset by this. He stated that he would never have done that, leaving the elderly to fend for themselves and subsequently perish in the wake of the storm.
