Additional Description
Summary
Dwayne Lewis [DL], 17, is a Katrina survivor from Eastern New Orleans. Dwayne had just reunited with his family and was starting his sophomore year at Abramson High School where he had only been living for eight months when the storm hit. Dwayne had to guide his mother and sisters to safety while they floated on an air mattress through the rising flood waters. He also survived the predators and the filthiness of the Superdome, and threats of males being killed and only females and children advancing to Houston. Dwayne was also separated from his mother and sister while on the way to Houston. Now, a senior at Taylor High School, he looks forward to advancing academically in Houston. Although Dwayne has found himself caught in the middle of numerous conflicts between New Orleans and Houston youth, he is determined to have an attitude of integrity, and to take advantage of the opportunities his new home town has to offer as he struggles to dispel the negative stereotypes associated with being from New Orleans.
