Bering Memorial United Church of Christ (BMUCC) was founded in 1848 in Houston, Texas, by Reverend Charles Goldberg as the First German Methodist Church. The congregation started with approximately 80 charter members, most of whom emigrated from Germany. The first church building was constructed in the mid-1850s. A second church was built in place of the first in 1878, and in the mid-1920s the church relocated to the Montrose neighborhood, where it remains today.

In 1911, the church was renamed Bering Memorial Methodist Church to honor brothers August and Conrad Bering, whose family had been involved with the church since its founding. Over the years, the church's name changed slightly to reflect the evolving structure of the Methodist Church, including a change to Bering Memorial United Methodist Church in 1966.

The church was incorporated in 1979 and designated a historical organization by the Texas Historical Commission in 1984.

The Bering Community Service Foundation was established in 1987, marking the church's involvement in supporting individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in the community by creating programs such as a dental clinic and a care center. From 1991 to 2021, the church was part of the Reconciling Ministries Network, a Methodist group that advocates for justice for LGBT+ individuals and promotes inclusivity within the church. This commitment to inclusion dates back to the 1960s and 1970s when the church's Administrative Board recognized increasing diversity in their neighborhood.

The church decided to end its membership in the Reconciling Ministries Network, stating that it was "unwilling to accept the ongoing discrimination against our siblings in Christ within The United Methodist Church." As a result, in 2021, the church adopted its current name, Bering Memorial Church United Church of Christ, following its transition to the United Church of Christ.

Prominent reverends in the collection include W. A. Knolle (1881-1884 and 1899-1903), F. Vordenbaum (1888-1891), E. A. Konken (1903-1907 and 1911-1914), Eugene Slater (1944 - 1950), Thomas Holcomb (1974-1978), Ronald D. Pogue (1978-1986), Donald W. Sinclair (1986-1996), and Marilyn Meeker-Williams (1996-2006).
