Scope and Contents
The Kinugawa Maru Ship is a popular diving site now, but it was a Japanese ship that was sunk during WWII. James Lienhard took photographs of the Kinugawa Maru during his time in the South Pacific during WWII. The Kinugawa Maru is located in the bay located between Guadalcanal and Tulagi, where a large amount of military vessels were sunk during WWII, giving the bay the nickname “Ironbottom bay” or “Ironbottom sound”.

JHL IV was drafted just after completing his master’s degree during the Korean War. He was sent to Fort Monmouth in New Jersey to conduct research on a new technology called a transistor. He was designing lab equipment to study the properties of silicon and germanium.
